Hanna Pavestone

Why pavers?

The process of paver installation is fairly simple. But, it must be done a certain way. Base rock, sand, pavers, and edge restraint come together to make an attractive installation that will perform for decades if properly installed.

Cost is an issue and we offer bottom line pricing with options for upgrades. Our margins are quite modest. Discounted prices rarely get to our price level. Few installers ever approach our quality of construction.

Design support is a large part of what we do.
Our industry has grown too fast and there are many people in our business now who have strong opinions and lack the experience to support those opinions.

We know what soils are likely to give movement problems, because we have performed so many jobs here in the East Bay. Excavation and base are expensive propositions. We can project most needs, but we will confirm our projections during demolition. More base is no guarantee of success. We offer the service that you need to get the performance you deserve with your investment. The top engineer in our industry can tell you that the local knowledge of the soil conditions is the best source of specifications.

Some manufacturers are publishing boiler plate specifications. Engineers are setting specifications and homeowners are inventing specifications for base rock. We can meet any specification, on request. But, our superior knowledge through experience has led to some surprising findings, based on review of projects that we have built that are now as much as 14 years old. Failure analysis is the basis for engineering. We can trace the few failures and determine what causes attacked what weakness in our projects. The few problems have been related to movement. Usually creep. Only a few times have we been asked to repair a 'dent' in a driveway. These no charge repairs have taught us a great deal about what soils actually benefit from the extensive and expensive specifications for over six inches of base rock. Ask us about soil conditions in your area and in the East Bay in general. Final decisions will be made during construction when we can see the colors and conditions of the clay soil in your property.

There are so many choices that we want you to take your time and be guided through the process, with as many options as you like, but with a focus upon the better choices for your home and your taste.
Edge restraint is key to the containment of the flexible system. There are some options for edge restraint that are very economical, but they are the weak link in the system. Nailing down edge restraints are easy, but they rely on galvanized spikes. Failure in less than a year is common, especially in clay soil. Concrete toe is a triangular shoulder of concrete. This is only a little better than the nail down edges.

Our concrete bond beam construction is a little costly, but it is the key to the performance of our paving installations. In difficult clay soil, creeping hillsides, and tree root environments, our driveways and patio have performed with the worst geological conditions and been easily repaired in the impossible conditions. 95% of repairs that were required in the old construction techniques were eliminated by this massive bond beam construction.

Paver installation is a very simple process, but it must be done a certain way to offer the assurance of long term success that you deserve when making a substantial investment in you home.

Design support is a large part of what we do. The design that you have in mind may be perfect. Or, it may be improved with some changes. Perhaps you have no idea what you really need to do. We are expert in all of these scenarios.

Removal and replacement of an installation may be the smart move for many driveways. We will discuss the options you have and explore the pricing and the other obstacles. Patios are seldom removed and replaced in exactly the same way as the original design. Pool decks usually offer wonderful opportunities to improve the entire flow and use of your backyard.

Drainage, slopes, safe steps and landings are automatic to us. We will show you what we want to do, and if you want to modify those projections, we will work with you to make those changes within the bounds of safety and performance.

We offer the service that you need to get the performance you deserve with your investment.
We have built retaining walls since the early times of the gravity friction block popularity. We know how to use the pins, lips, hollow cells, and geotechnical fabrics. We also install dry stack stone walls. Typically, these will not be used for walls that have much structural value. We can show you how to integrate walls to the rest of the hardscape in your yard.

Colors and styles of pavers can be confusing. We feel that there is a multistage process that is best for the selection of these things. There are so many choices that we want you to take your time and be guided through the process, with as many options as you like, but with a focus upon the better choices for your home and your taste.
